Starting with a mythical ballet created for Mao, Red plumbs the secret truths of Communist China and documents with elegance and irony the lives of dancers, their political and private conflicts, as well as the reception of the ballet.

A pioneer of contemporary post-Communist dance in China, Wen Hui has become a celebrity in the west with her spectacles Report of giving birth and Report on Body. She studied ballet in China, modern dance with Trisha Brown and dance theatre with Pina Bausch. She also makes documentary films.
