The Pavillon Noir was inaugurated on Thursday 19 October 2006 in the presence of Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, Minister of Culture and Communication, Maryse Joissains Masini, President of Community of the Pays d’Aix and Deputy-Mayor of Aix-en-Provence, Michel Vauzelle, President of Regional council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, and Jean-Noël Guérini, President of Departmental council of the Bouches-du-Rhône.

During the opening week-end from 20 to 23 October 2006, 14 companies (more than 150 artists) accepted the  Ballet Preljocaj's invitation to perform in the different areas of the Pavillon Noir.

Angelin Preljocaj inaugurated the stage of thePavillon Noir's Theater with the performance Les 4 saisons... He also presented the performance Fire Sketch, a special creation performed on the exterior of the building in collaboration with the composer Laurent Garnier and the pyrotechnic artist Pierre-Alain Hubert.

More than 16 000 spectators visited the Pavillon Noir during the opening week-end, making the most of more than 45  performances.
